Meet Kim Roy

Meet Kim, represented by “One Represents London” – a fabulous and hardworking hairstylist who is always surprising us with her incredible skills. She worked with us on our “Santa Baby” shoot as well as the recent “Good Intentions/Bad Habits” story.
We are always happy to have her on our team, which is why we asked her to be part of our next editorial “Flower Bomb” which we’ll shoot this Thursday.

But enough about us – find out about Kim’s tips and tricks and how she became one of MINMAX’s favourites session stylists.

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself – how long have you been working in the Beauty industry and how did you get started?

I started a hair apprenticeship when I finished school and absolutely loved it.
Straight away I knew that this is what I wanted to do. Making over clients and helping them feel amazing – it didn’t feel like work, it was more like a hobby.
After working in various busy salons I realised I wanted something a little different. I set up my own private studio, so I could offer a more exclusive 1 on 1 service. I experimented with creative designs and techniques that were more out of the ordinary and decided to do my own photo shoots so I could showcase my skills.
It was whilst I was looking for photographers and models to collaborate with that I discovered world of session styling. I thought Wow this is what I want to do for the rest of my life!
For the last 6 years I have traveled all over, creating beautiful photos and working with amazingly talented people, I have never looked back. I absolutely love what I do.

2) Why hair, and not make-up or nails? What fascinates you about creating hairstyles?

I also love makeup and nails, but there is something about hair that I have always been drawn to, the way it can be shaped to frame the face, or to compliment a particular outfit.
I love working with hair and all the different textures, it’s more like a fabric that you can mould and sculpt.

3) What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love that you are continuously learning and there are always new trends and techniques. It’s forever evolving.
Also the transformation process is quite spectacular, whether it’s a new cut and colour or an fashion editorial I’m working on, I love to see the before and after look.
Making people feel great about themselves is also hugely satisfying.

4) Talk us through some recent projects of yours.

I recently worked on a music video for Viktoria Modesta which was an awesome project to be part of.
Viktoria has a very unique and expressive style so I was able to design some really bold statement looks for her. The whole process was exciting, drawing inspiration from the clothes and sets, to putting together mood boards and designing the styles and then finally executing each look on the day of the shoot in record timing. It was all really fun.
You can see the video on my profile here –

5) When you worked with us, you created these beautiful “old-hollywood” glamour waves. What is your trick to achieve these?

I think sometimes people are a little scared of brushing the waves and can be too delicate with the hair after it’s been set.
I believe with a style like this you really need to brush the hair quite firmly to manipulate it into the shape you want.
Also using a very light hold hair spray to finish or sometimes just a shine spray is better, as it will allow you to brush through the hair smoothly without snagging and undoing all your waves.

See our how-to by Kim here.

6) Your favourite MAX hair look?

I guess it would be the Hollywood style waves. It is a bit of a process to create the perfect end result, but it is worth it and there is nothing more glamorous than beautifully formed sexy shiny waves.

7) Your favourite MIN hairstyle?

I really don’t think you can beat the understated pony. Just a bit of texture spray in at the roots for effortless style, perfect for work, or tease the roots around the crown area before you tie your pony to create a chic, fuss free party look.

8) What are 4 of your favourite hair products at the moment?

-Dry Texturising Spray – by Oribe
-Art Of Hair Volume Make – by Shu Uemera
-Cityswept Finish Spray – by Bumble and Bumble
Unleaded Skyscraper – by Fudge

9) What do you think will be the next big hair trend in 2015?

I think this year we will be seeing a lot of loose textured hair, less of the overly polished smooth styles and more cooler relaxed textures and waves. And lots of grey and silver tones!

10) Any advice for starting hairstylists?

If you are just starting out and want to know more about session styling see if you can shadow or assist a hairstylist on a shoot to get some experience.
You will be able to pick up a lot of hair tips and tricks, see what essential products and tools you need for your kit, and also the learn the right etiquette whilst on set.

11) We love your hair Kim. How do you achieve this trendy grey?

My hair is naturally black so it takes a lot of work to keep it grey and in good condition.
First I bleach it with Wella Blondor and 20% just on the roots so the rest of the hair doesn’t get unnecessary damage. Then I use Goldwell Topchic tint 10V+Pmix with 10% all over the hair for the perfect silvery grey tone. I do the colour every 4 weeks, and in between I shampoo with Fudge Clean Blonde Violet Toning Shampoo and use regular hair treatments to keep it shiny, silvery and nourished.

12) What did you enjoy most about working with MINMAX Beauty?

I love shooting with MINMAX. The last 2 shoots we have done have been so much fun! We have had all girl teams, good tunes playing and loads of giggles on set. Can’t wait for the next one!

13) Best advice that was ever given to you?

Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life – and good manners go a long way!

14) A motto that keeps you going?

Live simply
Dream big
Be grateful
Give love
Laugh lots
