The make-up artist behind the look of 'Simply Donna'

Ready with suitcases and bags full of glorious make-up, Caroline Barnes turns up on our latest shoot for ‘Simply Donna’. She gave Donna the look of  a cool and modern elf – enhancing her natural beauty.

Creating such a clean look requires real skill – so Caroline, with her 20 years of experience was an obvious choice.

10 Questions for Caroline

1) Tell us about yourself and your career- how did you get started?

After originally training as a beauty therapist, I studied at the London college of Fashion. It was a course that covered all aspects of makeup artistry from wig making, prosthetics, and cosmetology. During my training I started assisting makeup artists on shoots and music videos –  and gradually built up experience. I’ve been in the industry over 20 years now and have seen many wonderful changes. I love it as much today, as I did when I started.

2) What did you enjoy most about shooting with Donna Air and working with MINMAX Beauty?

On this particular shoot Donna left the creative direction up to the team – which was great. We could create beautiful images of her, with no constraints. And I loved collaborating with Elisabeth Hoff and the rest of the amazing team.

3) What is the secret to applying ’no-makeup-makeup’ – what do you have to focus on?

It’s mainly about creating perfect skin and subtle highlights with washes of colour and tone to create a complexion that looks untouched by makeup and simply radiant. You need to enhance your features and work with the contours of your face in order to perfect and beautify – this way people admire how lovely you look, rather than simply commenting on your makeup.

4)What hero products did you use during the shoot?

Max Factor Soft Copper Miracle Blush is such a gorgeous nude blush, which adds warmth to a complexion without looking like makeup. It also works as a subtle contour.
Laura Mercier Brow Powders helped me to create a defined yet soft brow – I wanted them to look natural yet give Donna’s eyes a gorgeous frame.
-And last but not least is the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector, which gave Donna’s perfect complexion a radiant glow and completed the modern and ‘untouched’ make-up.

5) How would you describe Donna’s look?

I’ve known Donna for many years and have never had the opportunity to create this makeup look on her.
It is very on trend and many make-up artists have created similar looks over the past few fashion weeks.
In my opinion there is something very beautiful about a nude-toned complexion, neutral lips, mascara free lashes, and strong, defined brows.
The simplified makeup allows the features of her face to stand out. The varying tones of the make-up, carve and highlight the facial bones, to exaggerate the beauty of Donna’s face – and subsequently the make-up becomes invisible. Donna has incredible eyes and amazing bone structure. This style of makeup enhances her natural beauty.

6) Any expert tips that you shared with Donna?

I used two or three tones of foundation to create a natural looking skin, and shared my little secret to only ever powder the t-zone and leave the rest of the face dewy and natural – for a young and fresh look.

7) How do you prepare for a shoot?

I carry 38 kilos of makeup with me on most jobs. I always worry I will need certain products and like to be prepared, but I could probably edit it down to a little less!

8) What key lessons have you learnt during your career?

Be true to yourself and treat others how you would like to be treated. It can be a fickle industry and it’s highly competitive, so it’s vital that you understand your strengths and be patient. Sometimes your career is sprinting in the fast lane, and other months you are just treading water.

9) Which 5 beauty staples couldn’t you live without?

Hard decision but these are my top five:
Tom Ford Traceless Foundation Stick
Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara
Alpha H Liquid Gold
Laura Mercier Brow Powders
Aromatherapy Associates Soothing Cleansing Balm

10) Your beauty motto is …

Beauty is the best version of yourself – inside and out.
